fwiw that's the empty part of Chile. there have been a few large earthquakes around there in recent years that haven't done too much damage. -- nm

yeah, but there was a 7.8 in 2005 that had 11, and a 7.7 nearby in 2007 that had 1 or 2 depending on who you listen to.

Hmm, there seem to be a few fatalities in that list - but mostly located on the other side of the pacific rim -- nm
