I don't really think it's a substitute for a real teacher (especially for an 8 year old). I think it can help you work on skills and learn some

things, but there's really no substitute for a live teacher. I've played the game, tried some teaching software, etc. It was all fine, but I learned much more and much more quickly when I started with a teacher (which I did in a group lesson setting).
