the 47k pedestrians killed I believe is higher than the number of drivers/passengers killed

which I believe has remained relatively steady since the 60's despite the increased number of cars and miles traveled, simply because cars are much safer to drive in (seat belts, collapsing steering wheels) and trama care to injured prevents many. oh and I'm sure there is a reduction in drunks on the road too
