I felt like Jake Johnson's character did learn something and make a decision. He had one woman that he had a great chemistry with. There was a physical and emotional connection, but she was kind of a mess. Then there was another woman that he cared deeply about though it was a much more quiet and less exciting on the surface, but she was much more stable. In the end he chose stable and secure over exciting.
I liked that in that respect it was almost an anti-romantic comedy. In romantic comedies it's always two people meet and they have this chemistry and you know that they're supposed to be together. One of them is with someone else who is if not a bad person is at least a little bit boring. We celebrate in the end when the two people with that "undeniable connection" get together. Drinking Buddies celebrates choosing someone that you can build a stable life with. I loved that aspect of it.
Pure Conjecture: I think the film is fairly autobiographical for the director. Greta Gerwig starred in several of his early films. I think that she is the woman he had the chemistry with and that the woman he married was the stable one.
