There's a difference between trying to get someone re-hired and getting someone fired.

Only two things have changed preceding this. One was that casting has started, and Paul Rudd is the only one that execs would listen to. The other was setting/changing a release date. Expected to be a Nov. '15 release it will now be a July '15 release. If anything, firing the guy who has been involved since the start should make it harder to hit a release date that was moved up 4 months.
Another factor could be that it became more clear what they wanted it to help set up in future movies, and that was an issue for Wright.
