15 - even 10 years ago - association with SNL was no guarantee for success.

I would even argue it was a black mark that performers had to overcome, some of which did, mind you... Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, even Dan Ackroyd. Failed projects were exponentially more frequent than successful ones (Blues Brothers or Wayne's World vs The Ladies Man or It's Pat).

I can't put my finger in just when things changed, but association with Lorne Michaels now is a hallmark of success. Not just for those who have forged their own path, like Will Ferrell, but for those who have stayed close to the fold like Jimmy Fallon. This circle of performers breeds success by their constant association. One successful artist means another can hitch his wagon and ride it to stardom. So... That's interesting. Just saying.
