The word 'gravy' is used a lot in some types of South Asian cooking as well. It's basically curry.

Say you're cooking meat with onion and spices, and you add some water to make a sauce and then thicken it - that's gravy.

While if you do the same thing but with coconut milk instead of water, that's curry.
