they have access to google. they can't do background checks really without your consent. also, I would recommend not giving an employer hell

so sure. call and ask why you weren't selected. "I was really interested in the opportunity. how could I have made myself a more attractive candidate for your consideration? what would I have needed to do differently to merit an interview?"
never be an asshole unless you absolutely have to be. be a freaking adult about it. someone is better than you. ask what they have that you don't.
