It was a uniter in that the threat of alien attack caused the world's governments to band together and put aside the escalating wars and conflicts to deal with the "alien threat".
From the world perspective, there was no real explanation other than "it did some crazy alien teleporting shit and landed in NYC". The alien was weird enough for everyone to accept they wouldn't understand its technologies and whatnot.
