The fabric is filled with a substance that moves in response to heat.
Rorshach used to work in a dress-maker's shop, and there was an order for a dress made of colour-shifting fabric that was cancelled - Rorshach believes it was because the customer was murdered (this was actually a real case). He makes the mask out of the colour-shifting fabric.
