I don't buy into David's "It's a neater package" argument, but a beasty would be difficult to pull off effectively.

That said, he probably should have cut the tiger pet out of the movie, because the creature was foreshadowing that Veidt had the ability to genetically create, whereas in the movie it's just a throw-away "Hey look! His tiger has horns of sorts."
