The background of the discussion is the David Frum-like thinking (which appeals to me) that the party needs to "get smarter" and turn against....

...The Rushes, but even I acknowledge that I'm not sure you would be able to count on picking up voters that would make up the difference for those who start sitting at home.
The only rub is, if you are gaining voters from the centre that are no longer Democrats, than you don't need to out number the voters you lose....Just match them and the gap will decrease.
