He was going to be sent down some time this season, no matter how well he was pitching.

There are two reasons. First, he's probably capped at about 100 innings left this season, probably less.

But the main reason (as they could just move him to the bullpen at some point to control that) is to avoid super 2 status. I think he would have qualified if they kept him up the rest of the season.

So, miss a few starts, let him skip a few starts in the minors, and bring him back up to help at the end of the season.
