Gamepad comes with system, so that's one controller (also is how you play off TV), old school Wii controllers all work.

So don't buy new.
WiiMotes with Motion Plus work best, regular Wiimotes are okay.
Nunchuck thingies are neat
Pro Controller (better)
Classic Controller (not as good)
