I would ask that you step back for me and consider one simple statement.

If a stop clock had been used as suggested for the past 25 years, would you ever have once thought, "I wish the time were less generally kept rather than precisely"?

There are two aspects to this argument. One is the persecution complex North American soccer fans feel about their sport. There is validity to that behavior. I understand and accept that. The other argument is that the current methodology in place is senseless. On that side of the debate, there isn't much of an explanation beyond "that's just the way it is, baby", and that is the Rembrandts song that people forget because it wasn't the theme from Friends.
