It's most similar to lacrosse, but then basketball, then I'd put soccer in there.
The fixed clock works for hockey because you have many more stoppages and "fouls", plus rigidly timed penalties, not to mention the actual object going way out of play and becoming irretrievable at times. As well, hockey isn't run at at continuous free flow like soccer is. In theory, soccer is a 45 min half without any stops in play at all. Hockey resets completely every 2 minutes or so (sometimes goes much longer without a whistle, but that's not all that often).

the main difference is hockey is 45 seconds of sprinting, soccer is 90 minutes of endurance. that changes the character of the games, imo. -- nm
