the pitcher (or the bowler, in cricket terms). the goal as a batter (batsman) is always to score runs. out for no runs is embarrassing.

if you're a good batsman, you're looking to score probably 30-40.
basically what happened probably a combination of the cricket equivalent of balls (as in not strikes), and hits that weren't long enough for the guy to score. you score in cricket by running between the wickets.
