I suspect that it is like the ill-fated clock decision. Some people see it clearly while others do not and there is not a lot of gray area.

The one sport that really isn't like the others is boxing, although that is less true now that MMA is a thing. Before the 2000s, there was nothing else like it. I guess the same is true of gymnastics unless we tie it to ice skating, which may or may not be a similar idea to tethering ice hockey and soccer.
