Veronica is initially diagnosed with a goiter but in fact has thyroid cancer. Eventually the correct diagnosis is made and she has surgery locally in Newport Beach hospital. Where they all but kill her (give her an anesthetic that's she allergic to), all but behead her in a crude, scoop everything out in her neck approach (thyroid + multiple lymph nodes) and then the butchers staple the incision.
So she has an extended recovery and is really sick from the reaction. She's essentially Frankenstein scarred. *shaking head* I remember getting to the point of telling some starting assholes that the scar was something I did and they needed to stop.
So treatment continues and then's there a lab test where it looks like the cancer has returned. At that point, the local doctor sends off the latest tests / scans to his friend at the Mayo.
So we go off to the Mayo and it is the best and worst of times. Worst well for the obvious, surgery again and THAT went so well the first time. Best cause the surgery is everything that it wasn't at Newport Beach. Latest techniques by top surgeon. A plastic surgeon supervising the closing of incision.
To top it off the Mayo has this super fancy wing of the hospital reserved for VIPs but if there are rooms available the top staff can select patients to use the room. So Veronica ends up in something resembling a hotel room with an on-call chef. I've got pictures someplace
Oh and on the way back, while we are checking in Veronica is talking to gate person and that she's just coming from surgery at the Mayo for thyroid cancer comes up in the conversation. At that moment the co-pilot is passing by and overhears the conversation. Turns out he has a sister with the same and when we get a mysterious page to the desk a few minutes later, he's had us upgraded to first class.
After that, Veronica has to go to follow up appointments. I think initially at 6 months intervals, then 12, and on the most recent visit was told 18 months!
So surgery was August (I think?), so 6 months is Feb and then August and so on.
So 2010 summer we decide that we're going to make a vacation out of it and I'll get to go as for financial reasons, only Veronica has made the follow up trips until then.
