I don't know if they ever went into the genealogy of Tony's family but...

as I mention, I've had relatives call it "gabbagold" and several variations.

My great aunt tells the story of when she and my grandmother (and associated husbands and other relatives) went to Italy as tourists. They'd spoken what they thought was perfect fine Italian all their lives. When they went there they were barely understood and one or two people told them to just stop speaking their version of "Italian" and stick to English...it was less painful for the natives than the butchered peasant babbling they were apparently doing.

When you look into my genealogy on that side of the family we really were literally mountain folk.
