The point is that China has a lot to lose from a war with the US, and America has a lot to lose from a war with China.

There wouldn't be winners. The global financial markets wouldn't be cheering. The US economy would suffer from the shift away from Chinese imports and the increased risks to trade routes.
And China's military strategists are looking at how to extend their power while deterring foreign interference, because that's what military strategists do. It's an interesting article, but it doesn't say anything about what China's political leaders are actually thinking.
