I think the article is fairly optimistic from an American Point of view...

they're pinning our hopes on subs? With the rapid advancement in the Chinese ballistic and air forces they won't have to get their toes wet to either take over Taiwan or decimate it. There's a reason the Chinese have invested heavily in military cargo planes as well.
Ultimately, if we tangle with them over Taiwan we could lose a carrier or two to their anti-ship missiles or stealth strike fighter(s). This was said in the '60s and 70s as well with the Soviets (hence the F-14) but it's still a very real possibility.
