the game and has been asking for it to be done away with for years. Apparently a lot of people hate it.

I'd be fine with it if they abandoned it in the future. I don't think anyone really cares about finishing third instead of fourth. All they care about it winning and if you get knocked out you shouldn't have to play another game, it's meaningless. There's no third place prize or trophy. Just let the teams go home.
And this goes for the NCAA too. No one cares or remembers any of the third place games.
