A few years ago, just a couple of days before Christmas, I was next to the left turn lane and my view was blocked by a tall vehicle. Luckily, I made sure to check and would have been smushed by a drunk driver who slammed into the girl in the next lane who hadn't looked. I would have been the middle of an iron sandwich. She ended up being spun around and travelling into a light pole.
