I'm too sedentary. The only way I could get motivated to go to the gym was to pay someone to expect me to be there.

On my own, I can find a thousand reasons to delay going. But with the trainer expecting me to be there, then it's an appointment that I can't miss. The cost is irrelevant. I could be getting the trainer's services for free. It's being expected to be there that matters in motivating me.

That's just one of the major changes I've made over the last 4 years. I have almost completely eliminated soda and caffeine from my diet. We eat way more home cooked meals (no microwave stuff, except frozen veggies), eat out a lot less. I sleep better. I went from sleeping erratically and usually being up well past midnight and struggling to get up before 8 am, to being asleep before 11:30 most nights and up before 7 am almost every day. I attribute better sleep to eliminating caffeine.

I probably still eat too much meat (it's part of every meal), but portion sizes are getting better. And I drink almost exclusively water, at this point.

These changes were hard. They took a lot of effort. I do live by the rule that nothing is forbidden, but that quantities have to be strictly monitored. So soda is almost always something I only have while eating out.
