LYC: Today I went urban exploring in El Segundo. It has its charms but it also weirded me the eff out in a Stepford Wives kind of way

Do you have that nearby town that tries to keep an old timey Old Town with quaint store fronts and such? That's downtown ES. But they don't do it to attract visitors. In fact, it kinda feels like they want to keep people away. Seems like a local secret!

I must have said "you have got to be kidding me" to myself half a dozen times while walking around. If you've ever seen Sunset Valley in the Sims 3, El Segundo is exactly like that, right down to the beach and the smaller versions of every kind of business (heck, the Lakers and Kings have their practice facilities here).

This place has the works, 1950's style. Big central park with gazebo and huge old shade trees. A community theater called Old Town Music Box which boasts of its "mighty" Wurlitzer pipe organ. A high school straight out of Sweet Valley High. All that was needed was the clock tower from Back to the Future. But when I saw the church advertising for the Ice Cream Social? That's when I thought something was up and a cute Chamber of Commerce full of old people must be behind it. I mean, an ice cream fucking social! I thought they only had those in the movies.

And it's not even a shabby kind of old town, which are a dime a dozen. ES has money and this old town is a flawless kind of place. It's weird! Also, ES is full of business and industry (that is what they're known for) and none of that looks shabby either. Nary an empty store front to be seen. In this economy?

I appreciate this place, though. It's a middle class enclave that's right near where I live and on the ocean. I'll be back.

I hope this place isn't full of Republicans.
