I'm going to say either shutter is stuck, or a sensor problem. I lean toward sensor given the autofocus issues.

it could be a simple fix at a service centre. if the sensor has never been cleaned, it could even just be that.

that or take the lens cap off.

- now that I think about it, I had a similar problem with my d70 several years back. it was a reasonably cheap fix (like $80). maybe worth checking out. - mafic Jul 21, 21:22
