Getting there was harrowing for everyone. Location was Havre de Grace, in northern Maryland, Friday evening in the summer, there was lots of traffic. Kelly and WH made it on time, but Dave was late and I was later. They were good enough to save me a seat. I missed the first half hour, unfortunately.
The service was VERY well attended, hundreds of people there, from all walks of life. I overheard someone (I think Landbeck) saying that 40 family members were there, and we met a number of them. All delightful people. Landbeck's great uncle Ron, who was there with his adorable guide dog in training. Landbeck's grandmother. Many siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles were also present, and someone had the very smart idea of giving them nametags showing their relationship to Max.
When I arrived, Landbeck's daughter Emmalyn was giving her remarks, and she told a number of stories about him. I never met him, but I felt like I did a little bit, through the stories people told and pictures they shared. Landbeck's other children played a musical piece, which was beautiful. Then Landbeck gave his remarks. I will never know how he was able to hold it together. He delivered the most honest, heartfelt eulogy I have ever heard, talking openly about how Max died and the problems that led up to it. He talked about fault, responsibility, and what he should have done different. And he reached out to everyone present, asking them to learn from Max's life and his death. I will never forget it.
Afterward there was a reception, and Landbeck came over and spent a few minutes with us, which he really didn't have to do with all of those people there. We were all able to hug him and offer our support, and we got the change to hug his wife Jennilyn as well.
Landbeck is truly a remarkable man, with an equally remarkable family. I never met Max, but his memorial service really moved me, and I will never forget it. Especially seeing how his family, friends, and church embraced him and each other so fully.
Thanks to ST for helping bring Max's siblings home for the service and donating to the Boy Choir. The choir was there for the service and they sang some really beautiful songs at the reception.

It was moving just getting to the service. There was probably 400 people there, and maybe 200 to 300 cars.
