The difficulty is that he had to parry instead of block.

To block you just hold the control stick away from your opponent. To parry, you need to tap away (or down for a low parry) on the control stick at the moment of impact (I looked it up, because I didn't know). So the timing had to be precise. And if he missed on any of them, tried to block any of them, or had any part of his parries register as a block (which I think would be very easy with that amount of quick parrying), he loses.
