I rapped at freestyle nights in clubs for years when I lived in Nashville.

Primarily ciphers (which are like more cooperative freestyles in a circle, where the only battling going on is who can make the best rhymes, like "battles" were in the old days before KRS-One and some other pioneers actually starting attacking other rappers directly). But those always tended to spawn some more direct battles between the MCs in the group, usually when some of the younger kids in the circle didn't know their history and assumed all freestyles are supposed to be battles so they'd randomly clown other people in the circle, which would then turn all the "elder statesmen" in the group to toss little barbs in that kid's direction as part of their verses the rest of the night.
And I will say this about 8 Mile: those club scenes early in the movie very accurately capture the tension of being the only white MC in a rap club. In fact, my favorite shot in that whole movie is when Em wins his first battle and walks off stage, and on his way into the back the bouncer guy stops him and gives him a little fist bump. I very distinctly remember the first night that happened to me, after about 2 months at the ciphers, getting approached by a couple MCs I hadn't met who complimented my stuff. It's a good feeling.
