There is a standoff in the works here between Disney and Amazon over the contract terms for selling some of Disney’s biggest DVD/Blu-ray titles including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Maleficent, Million Dollar Arm and Muppets Most Wanted. The on-line retailer will have the right to sell the instant videos but not the DVD or Blu-ray copies according to Deadline. Consumers will have to go to other retail options like Best Buy or Target to purchase those unless the dispute is resolved. Muppets Most Wanted is due out on Tuesday with Captain America: The Winter Soldier out on the 9th of September.
Amazon was in a similar dispute earlier this year with Warner Brothers over the release of The Lego Movie. The situation was eventually resolved, but now Amazon is bumping heads with Disney for the same purpose, increasing their profit margins.
Amazon is also in a dispute with publishing giant Hachette over their e-books and Amazon’s treatment of authors. This fight is gaining a lot of attention as Stephen Colbert has used his television show to draw attention to the issue and now a group of 900 authors have formed together to go after Amazon as well including Stephen King, this year’s Fiction Pulitzer Prizer winner Donna Tartt, Malcolm Gladwell and 2011 Pulitzer Fiction recipient Jennifer Egan.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos now has two battle fronts to wage war on, it will be interesting to see how long both of these standoffs will continue.
