It's a competently-lit track. The kid was outside the racing line for much of the issue. Stewart, the one guy who knew where the accident was, was riding high on the track for no reason.
He goosed the throttle in a car that kicks the back-end out right as he went by the kid. That back-end killed the kid.
This wasn't a kid running into traffic. It was a kid angry and a shade too close where he was hit by a show-boating superstar / finest level driver on the planet.
