Sure he was an idiot, but the key factor is on what Stewart did once the kid was out there.

If he revved the engine, like you say, to avoid the person on the track, then fine.
If he revved the engine to give the kid a scare without regard to the consequences, that's manslaughter, regardless that the person on the track shouldn't have been there.
