And instead people involved were able to assess, realize the horrible truth, and then get ready to announced.

That just seems...something. Better? Classier? More respectful? We still found out quickly (within 5 hours of the 911 call) but we weren't gossiping like biddies for 4 hours until confirmation came in. Instead it was: announcement, formal and for real. And that's that.

Maybe I'm a pre-Internet kid, but I appreciate that in a situation like this.
