I think two different things are happening, and they layer seamlessly. We are sad for his passing, sad for his family's loss. But when we imagine the

personal anguish he was experiencing, we empathize with it, and feel that pain a little bit. We cannot hear of someone's despair, and not feel the resonance of it.

So the mourning for his loss would be the same no matter how he passed, but the bewildering, "Why?!" of how he could have been *that* depressed is what makes this a more universal response.
