I read it too. I started to get it more when he said he "coudln't comprehend" the choice to commit suicide. That was obvious.

It's different for different people. I'll tell you how it was for me. I felt pain, and I wanted to stop it. I was not capable of thinking about the feelings of my freinds and family. It was like being in a burning building and "making the decision" to jump off the roof.
