In Walsh's case, he had/has depression that he can control.

So, I'm guessing since he's able to control his suicidal thoughts, he believes everyone can. I don't think he gets the degree some mental illness escalates to. Especially when mixed with narcotics.

It's like if someone contracted HIV, but through medication had it under control, then told everyone that no one dies from it.
