"We abuse each other as friends" is probably poor wording. We joke with and at each other as friends, harm is not meant. The jokes about Jim and the foot are meant as just that, not as mean character attacks and I am sure he knows that. If he was bothered, he'd tell us. And we'd stop.

But we're not mind readers. We don't know when someone is really laughing and when they're wincing. We need to tell each other.
