It's only causing his grief because he made such a huge deal in the campaign about stopping it. And today he signed a bill full of earmarks.

The news reports are pointing those things out. They are airing quotes of him during the campaign, and then showing the bill stuffed full of earmarks.
They also pointed out that he signed it absent of cameras. Like he was hiding it.
I am watching PBS right now and even they are giving him crap about it.
