Giving 72million to a 26/27 year old position player for 6 years is *a lot* different than giving 20m/6years to a pitcher passed 30.

The offers are wildly different. Pitcher longevity is better but no one wants to be paying that money to any pitcher over 33-34. You can likely trade and eat some of Castillo's contact if you absolutely have to but good luck unloading Lester with that salary.
Ben learned from watching the Crawford/Gonzalez/someone else I can't remember debacle. It's a miracle that the Dodgers bailed us out. Those were team killing contacts.
This may be a bit of a PR move as well. I like Castillo but by all accounts he's just a "really nice piece to have" as opposed to a team changer. But it makes the fanbase happy.
