well, 2 things to that . . .
|
1 ... as i said, i'm a grown boy. I can handle myself and can choose to walk away from it if I want to. However, it bothers me that kids risk exposure to such things. They have enough to deal with as kids. I don't think that they should have to risk exposure to such things when they're at a public library.
2 . . . Let the person file a complaint. The library has policies in place, ostensibly including the avoidance of such things as potentially vulgar, insulting, or otherwise objectionable materials while on computers. You'd think that this policy (which is clearly displayed) could, should, and would give the library clearance to say something to such individuals if and when observed to be engaging in such activities.
On a personal note, I have on occasion been working on something on a computer at the public library. A couple of times i have inadvertantly saved a new document to the computer's "my documents" file instead of my flash drive. When I go in to access that document and transfer it to a flash drive, I have personally seen legit pornographic materials and 'saved links' to porn that someone saved onto the computer . . . materials that are explicit and graphic. And yes, I reported it to a staff member before deleting it from the computer.
And while I'm not here to rail against porn in and of itself (to anyone who wants to partake thereof, i can only say that that's your business and i can express my own thoughts on it, but it's still a matter of personal choice and all), I will say that it's entirely inappropriate for anyone to be doing something like that in a place like the public library where there is a legitimate concern over a child seeing it.
I guess this is just one of those hot button things for me that really irks the eff out of me. And yes, i'm considering writing a letter or something . . . doing something to alert the library staff of this in the (hopefully not deluded) hope that they'll do something about it. and if they say something to such a person, and that person "gets their feelings hurt" and wants to complain, I say go ahead. If you can't respect a decent library policy that is meant for the benefit of other patrons, then too bad. Get over it or go somewhere else.
