Yeah, I had that problem too. They're advantage is that you'll be able to expand your Academy quickly.

To trade you need to have a trading port and trading post.
In the trading post you can search for goods to buy and you can sell off excess goods you have.
You'll also need a cargo ship to pick up and move your goods.
You shouldn't need much marble until you get to around level 3 or 4 in most buildings. The town wall is going to need a bunch of marble to get past level 2.
Talk to Mel or CQ, they may have some supplies that they can spare if you need.
