You get dropped on a random island when you start, to find everyone you need to search for their username.

Go to the highscore link on the top of the page and there's a search box.
You can find Mel by putting in just Mel, CQ is CQ1 and I'm Krusty as usual.
Another way is to get the person you're looking for to give you the coordinates which you can enter manually from the world view.
