If I leave a company and clients want to come with me is it illegal to take them? I didn't actively solicit them. I told them I was giving notice

and going out on my own. I didn't ask them to give me their business they decided they want me to continue providing the services they had been receiving into the future.
I didn't sign a non-compete or non-solicitation form. NY along with many other states have laws about trade secrets and client lists are a trade secret.
Did I do anything illegal in taking on the clients?
