appealing to the widest possible audience is Hollywood's business.

I don't buy it (That it's a reason for a slump, not that it's happening). I do think the lack of original ideas is hurting the overall market, but when original stuff is thrown out there, audiences ignore it, relatively speaking. There's a full $20 million gap between adapted and non-adapted material.
