and how to make them. China is the first foreign market to be a specific factor, both because of its size and also the way the Chinese government has restricted access to showing films there.
Films that won't appeal to Chinese audiences or get permission to be played in China have less chance of being green-lit by Hollywood.
I don't think this is the foundational reason for the slump. But I do think it feeds into the broader trends you're talking about - lack of originality, wanting to build on established properties that are an easier sell, etc...
