we lost a great nurse today and I'm pissed of as all hell.
what I can get away with talking about is this: we get a patient in who is 1. a frequent flier 2. works in conjunction with the hospital 3. has a legitimate physical problem 4. has developed a drug addiction from her care. 5. almost died from an overdose of prescribed medications from her history of abusing them 6. has been doctor hopping because they stop giving prescriptions
pt comes in with the usual complaint (cant be more specific at this time) and asks for her usual treatment. MD hasn't seen the pt yet, but orders some stuff to help her at the request of her nurse. pt is all pissed because it's not "what I need" and gets all upset. RN who cannot give something that's not ordered lets the MD know, and the doc says "I'll have to see them first" which is what any good doctor would do. he sees the pt and long story short decides that he's not ordering more at this time.
pt somehow contacts her boss who also works in conjunction with us, but isn't an ER employee. I'll call this person bitch-ass-mother-fucker (BAMF for short) so I don't have to use their real name. BAMF comes down and starts raising shit because we aren't drugging the hell out of the pt (the same pt who almost died recently because of her abuse), and starts bitching out the nurse. nurse tells BAMF that she can't do something not ordered. BAMF thengoes to the doc and starts complaining, when she's done the doc calmy asks "and you are?" *high 5's the doc* BAMF doesn't like that someone doesn't know who she is and goes back to the RN and tells her to give the pt something more even withoout the order (illegal). then she looks through the chart to see what was ordered (illegal again) and keeps harassing the nurse.
eventually the boss gets involved by BAMF. the RN gets called off her break by the boss, goes into their office and quits on the spot. I don't know what happened in there yet for sure, but history would make a guess that the RN wasn't backed up probably a correct guess.
un-frickin-real, we lost a great RN over a pt with a drug problem demanding drugs because her boss breaks all sorts of HIPAA laws and causes a disruption that would have gotten any other visitor escorted out.
fucking BAMF!
