over the last 20 years they have closed/consolidated all the little depots and bases.

like San Fran had the Presidio, but also Fort Mason and Fort Funston literally next door, across the golden gate was another base plus the Nike missle bunkers. all these bases had their own commanders and admins.

Ft Lewis here had a separate Madigan Hospital, across the freeway was North Lewis and McChord afb, lewis and mcchord have combined under one admin even though its army and air force. at the height of the wars there were 35,000 in uniform, who knows how many 'contractors'

there are two elementary schools on the old fort lewis side and one on the air base side, now you have strip malls, several theatres, mini marts besides the commissaries and PXs fast food like KFC and burger king

there are a third less now, and aiming for half of what it used to be
