I think the issue is less "reporters weren't doing their jobs" because they didn't dig, but because

no one really cared until the video showed up.
Too much reporting is driven by what will get eyeballs instead of what is important.
There weren't enough eyeballs to warrant Rice coverage until the video was released. Not reporters are trying very hard to keep the eyeballs by stoking outrage, etc.
It's not journalism in the slightest. It's commercial opportunism.
