I finally found a launcher for Minecraft so my son can play mods effortlessly.

The technical hurdles were immense. Getting a mod to work was nearly impossible, often due to version issues, dependencies and - frequently - sketchy download sites. With this launcher installed, he's already started soaring. Last night, it was "Dad, come see the space station I built."
